Objectives: The students will describe the historical and cultural implications from Guatemalan “Muñecas Quitapenas”. They will create Worry Dolls with human facial characteristics.

Faith Ringgold Cityscapes

Level: 1st

Duration: 2 class periods

Objectives: The students will read the book Tar Beach by Faith Ringgold and investigate the illustrations. They will describe the difference between “portrait”, “landscape” and “cityscape”, as well as the difference between “foreground” and “background”. Students will create their own cityscape collage including the buildings, stars, the moon and a cut out photo of themselves.

 

Sea Creature Shadow Puppets

Level: 2nd

Duration: 1 class period

Objectives: The students will identify various sea creatures and their habitats, to include diet. They will design silhouettes of assigned creatures using geometric and organic shapes to create Sea Creature Shadow Puppets. Students will present their shadow puppet along with a brief creative monologue describing the animal habitat.

 

Moon Phase Tapestries

Level: 3rd

Duration: 1 class period

Objectives: The students will identify the phases of the moon and celestial paintings of Stella Maria Baer. They will describe what causes the phases. Students will create resist-painting tapestries that include three sequential phases of the moon.

 

Wearable Hair Peices

Level: 4th

Duration: 1 class period

Objectives: The students will describe the life and work of Madam CJ Walker. They will identify imaginative hair art across time and cultures, including Marie Antoinette’s Wigs, Dennis Rodman and Sonya Clark. Students will create individualized, imaginary, wearable hair pieces.

 

"The Fan" Row Houses

Level: 5th

Duration: 2-3 class periods

Objectives: The students will observe the Victorian architecture prevalent in “The Fan” neighborhood. They will review the historic prevalence of the architecture in the neighborhood. Students will create mini 3-D row houses utilizing elements of Victorian architecture.
